Sailfish Fishing - Sailfishing
Miami, Key Largo & Islamorada

Sailfishing off Miami, Key Largo & Islamorada.

Sailfish are one of the most sought after fish in the keys. Sailfish are plentiful, as cold fronts, cool the water temperatures north. This drives the bait schools further south and not far behind the predators. They are great gamefish, on light tackle, they jump a lot, are beautiful and a great adversary. Although sailfish can be caught year round, our typical sailfish season starts in November and ends in March.

As I indicated earlier, sailfish migrate south following schools of bait. There might be several fish shadowing a school. Therefore, it is very common to have multiple bites and multiple hook up. Now that's excitement.

Florida Keys SailfishThe preferred method for sail fishing is with live bait. Therefore, the first order of business is to catch our bait. Usually, we catch our bait in 10 to 20 feet of water. When we have enough. We move off shore maybe a 10 minute ride. Sailfish are shallow water fish which means we will fish 3 to 5 miles off shore. You never lose sight of land.

We will either slow troll or drift are baits over structure. If condition are right; we can put up a kite. Either method is an extremely exciting way to fish as you will often see the fish and the strike as it happens.

Releasing a SailfishThe chances of catching a sailfish during "sailfish season" are very good. This can be the first bill fish for many anglers and most anglers will choose to have that sailfish mounted. The beauty of that is that you no longer have to kill a sailfish to have a mount made. As a matter of fact, killing sailfish aboard my vessel is not allowed. A measurement of the total length is the only thing needed. Sailfish are definitely a catch and release species.

As mentioned earlier, sailfishing season coincides with our busiest season. If you do want to target sailfish and book a trip. Please call well in advance so we can get you out on the exact date that you wanted.
